Bruce Amspacher had this to say about the 1893 prooflike dollar in Chapter 64 of The Comprehensive U.S. Silver Dollar Encyclopedia by John W. Highfill -- "If you took all of the GEM PL 1893 dollars that have appeared in the last ten years and put them in your hand, you would still have enough room in your hands for a Big Mac and fries." Bruce made this comment about the two known GEM PL dollars of this date that were sold in 1976 and 1980 when GEM was a nice coin but not necessarily the MS-65 we think of today.
My coin is not even mint state, but that doesn't change it's rarity. NGC population contains 18 proof likes. The highest is an MS-64 folowed by 61(2), 60 (3), and 58 (8). The lone DPL coin is an AU-55!
I have attributed this example as a VAM-3 - Doubled closed 3 in date.
The coin was purchased in February, 2006 from Steve Estes in Portland, OR.
