Owner Comments:
After discovering the tendency for the mound bearing the words "FIVE CENTS" to wear off, Mint Engraver Charles E. Barber got involved. Not only did he replace the raised mound with the straight ground, he took the liberty to "refine" the design a bit. Gone forever were some of the details of the hair and feathers of the obverse portrait and the ruggedness of the buffalo's hide on the reverse. Professional jealousy? Who knows? Fortunately for collectors, many mint state examples of this beloved design still exist today. Even so, I can always appreciate a well struck, original gem such as this.
