Date/mm Information: The 1942-P was the first issue of the war time composition of the Jefferson Nickel. The story behind the composition change is well known and will not be discussed here but the composition changed from (75% copper & 25% nickel) to (56% copper-35% Silver-9% Manganese). High quality eye appealing examples are readily available.
Coin Description:
Essentially untoned, this coin has blazing luster and a near perfect strike evidenced by the 6 full steps as well as complete window, door, and column detail on Monticello.
Comments:
Since I have never been able to locate a truly monster toned 1942-P, the pinnacle of technical quality represents the collection. It is worth mentioning that the 1942-P also represents the only proof war nickel ever issued. As a result, 1942-P proofs are very popular. I don't collect proof Jeffersons but I do have one. A simple proof would be too boring, but a 1942-P PF66 CAMEO, well that is a horse of a different color. And with a population of 1/4, an expensive horse!
