James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel.

The US Mint released the 2019 Gold Buffalo Proof on April 12, 2019. The release day price was $1,660.00; the price of gold was $1,290.40. A year after the release, the price sky rocketed to $2,415 as gold had soared upward. Total sales reported by the US Mint reached 14,844 coins sold. A new record low for the third year in a row.
