James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel.

The US Mint released the 2018 Gold Buffalo Proof on May 10, 2018. Gold is on the rise again so the release day price for the 2018 Proof Buffalo was up to $1,710.00; the price of gold was $1,321.20. You would think that with the increase in gold prices and the higher cost for a Buffalo Proof that sales would decline greatly. Surprisingly sales for the 2018 Buffalo were only 54 coins short of sales for the 2017 coin. Sales of the 2018 Gold Proof reached 15,756 coins sold. A new record low for the second year in a row.
