Twelfth year of issue . James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. The US Mint released the 2017 Gold Buffalo Proof on May 11, 2017. The release day price for the third year in a row was $1,590.00; the price of gold was $1,225.16. With no price increase you would think that sales of the Buffalo Proof would stay consistent but that was not the case in 2017. Sales fell to a new record low dropping about 28% from 2016 with only 15,810 coins sold, breaking the record low from 2015. Are the new High Relief Gold coins taking away sales from the Buffalo Proof? They most likely are.
