James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel.

The US Mint released the 2016 Gold Buffalo Proof on March 31, 2016. The release day price was $1,590.00; the price of gold was $1,232.43. With no price increase from the previous year Buffalo lovers must have been very happy as total sales jumped over 30% from 2015, or was it the 10th Anniversary for this coin that boosted sales?
