One Hundredth Anniversary of the Buffalo coin. James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. The US Mint released the 2013 Gold Buffalo Proof on May 23, 2013. The release day price was $1,790.00; the price of gold was $1,390.29. Total sales for the 2013 Gold Proof dropped again as compared to the previous year only reaching 18,584 coins sold, breaking the record low of 2008. Perhaps the temporary sales slump was in anticipation of the Reverse Proof Buffalo that was scheduled to be released in August of 2013.
