Sixth year of issue. James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. The US Mint released the 2011 Gold Proof Buffalo on May 19, 2011. The release day price was $1,760.00; the price of gold was $1,511.55. Total sales for the 2011 Gold Proof dropped by almost 42% as comparable to the previous year only reaching 28,683 coins sold.
