Owner Comments:

1887/6 $1 VAM-2 MS66 Prooflike PCGS. A Top 100 Variety and the Plate Coin for PCGS Coin Facts for this issue. Population: 5 in 66 Prooflike, 0 finer (1/20). Ex: Jack Lee, Part II. The remnants of an under type 6 are visible on either side of the 7 at the bottom of the primary digit, identifying this popular Guide Book overdate. The Philadelphia Mint produced a staggering total of more than 20 million Morgan dollars in 1887, using 55 obverse dies to strike the coins. Only one obverse die is known with the overdate feature, so it is assumed the VAM-2 mintage was a tiny fraction of the reported production.

This coin is an impressive premium gem, with well-detailed design elements that show just a trace of blending on the hair above the ear. The well-preserved, brilliant surfaces show a mix of vibrant frosty mint luster on the devices and prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Eye appeal is terrific.
