The 1879 quarter eagle had a mintage of 88,960 pieces plus 30 proofs. Approximately 2,000 coins of this mintage survive today. Most survivors are clustered in the AU-58 to MS-62 range. Gems are very elusive. The MS-64 grade is the highest normally seen.
