Most collectors consider the 1849 large cent to be a common date that is lumped together with the other "big pennies" of the period. It is actually a better date in Choice AU and better as I learned when I was shopping for this coin.

The example shown here has been sold as an "MS-60" when it was raw. As the grade suggests, it falls just short of the Mint State grade.
