Owner Comments:

Two commemorative $5 gold coins were released in 1997. The second coin issued honored President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a portion of the proceeds from the coin's sale going to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Commission. The obverse of the coin features an upper torso portrait of FDR. The reverse shows the Presidential Seal, as it appeared at his inauguration in 1933. (And, I might add, that's a pretty skinny eagle.)

There were only 11,894 uncirculated and 29,474 proof coins minted by the West Point Mint. This coin is an odd, one-off production since there was no silver dollar or half dollar commemorative were part of the release. These coins are somewhat difficult to find in perfect MS70 condition (about 485 graded by NGC in MS70) and in perfect PF70 condition (about 515 graded in PF70, or less than one-half of those graded in PF69 condition).
