In 1984 the U.S. Mint presented five $10 commemorative coins to celebrate the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. The Philadelphia, Denver, West Point, and San Francisco mints each produced a John Mercanti designed coin depicting two runners holding the Olympic torch on the obverse and the Great Seal of the United States (a heraldic eagle) on the reverse. These coins were the first gold commemoratives produced in over 50 years.

The Denver Mint produced 34,533 proof coins. (PF69 outnumbers PF70 graded coins 9:1)

1984 -- Gold started the year at $380/oz. and ended at $308/oz. Auction purchase from Bay Precious Metals, 08/16/2016. $697.36
