Comments:
The story behind this particular coin is incredible. I purchased an expensive coin (over $1K) about a decade ago and the seller sent this raw little full step gem as a freebie. I thought the toning was extreme but loved the steps so I put it in my album collection where it stayed until September 2019 when I decided to submit the coin to NGC to round out an existing submission.

During the grading process, I got an e-mail from NGC telling me that the coin had environmental damage along with an offer to have NCS conserve the coin for an additional $25. NGC gave my 24 hours to make the decision whether to have the coin conserved or not. Since I paid no money for the coin, and the run of the mill 1943-D MS66 6FS is about $50, I figured it would be better to break even on the coin rather than have spent $20 on a problem raw war nickel that would be very difficult to sell for that $20 price tag. I told NGC to proceed with the conservation and waited patiently for both the grade and change in appearance. The result was an MS67 6FS untoned blazing gem that immediately took the 43-D spot in my Jefferson Nickel Registry collection, unseating a very attractive MS67* 5FS.

My total investment in this coin is $45 and the current NGC Price guide is $250 (11/2022).
