The 1856 Double Eagle has a lower survival rate than the other double eagles struck during this era. The average grade for this date is only AU-53. It is a very rare and under-recognized issue in high grades. The surfaces of this coin show that it was not salvaged from a ship wreck and retain considerable mint luster in the protected areas.
