This coin only exists because in 1925 Winston Churchill, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer and Master of The Royal Mint at the time, decided to reintroduce Britain to the Gold Standard. Never intended to be released George V obverse portrait by Bertram MacKennal with the classic Pistrucci St George and the Dragon on the reverse A Sovereign in 22 carat gold
