Circulation strike mintage 1,014,400

The flat rims of this year/mintmark frame the design elements nicely. The gorgeous rim toning on the obverse and reverse resembling a dark chestnut and tan color caught my eye. Some of the original mint luster is still present but only in the protected areas between letters.

On the obverse, the head details are almost full, but the central skirt lines as well as Liberty's left hand show a notable loss of sharpness.

On the reverse, the Eagle's breast and left leg are mostly flat. That being said, the breast and legs are nicely separated.

In general, not as well struck as this year's Philadelphia minted coins, with this example's (Denver) details fairly flat.

Numismatic Note -- In May 2017, it was advertised "1916 half dollar, S and D mints, each $1.00" -- a far cry from what I paid for this coin in 2019. Henry Chapman (Philadelphia) and John Zing (Maryland) were two of the only few dealers that carried these coins back in 1917.
