Owner Comments:

Charles Barber made some very minor changes to the obverse hub in 1901. This coin is one of the coins with the new changes. The changes were not described in print until the 1950's. I find the easiest way to identify the new hub is examine the ear. The ear on the new hub has a larger lobe and there is clearly a second cartilage visible in the inner ear. As a result of these hub modifications, the word "LIBERTY" on the head band tends to wear away slightly faster and an otherwise VF coin for wear may not have clear sharp letters on their bottoms. My 1901-S half is an example of this wear pattern.
