Circulation strike mintage 491,600

This example of a 1938-D exhibits moderate even wear with overall good sharpness to all key/major areas when viewed in hand and under high magnification (7x).

On the obverse, worn areas are apparent on Miss Liberty's head, left/right arms and left leg with the head showing approximately 60% of design details, whereas the left hand showing approximately 50% of design detail. As expected with this level of wear, the highest points of design detail are rounded. Miss Liberty's skirt lines are visibly worn, yet are present (none crossing the body). Lettering is bold.

On the reverse, the Eagle's breast and legs are well-separated by some feathers. Breast, left leg and right wing end feathers are moderately worn with flat areas. Feathers on the left leg are mostly absent with the ones present being flat. A hairline is seen on the left leg.

Numismatic News: The 1938-D is the key issue among Liberty Walking Halves of the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1950s, when bank-wrapped rolls of Liberty Walking Half Dollars of the 1930s were found (particularly for those of 1935 and later), only one roll of 1938-D year/mintmark was discovered.
