Owner Comments:

The first commemorative dollar of 2001 was the American Buffalo Silver Dollar, issued in honor of the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution. The obverse and reverse of the coin is based up the design of the Buffalo Nickel (aka, the Indian Head Nickel, produced 1913-1938) by James Earle Fraser. This was a very popular coin and it sold out two weeks after its release.

There were 227,131 uncirculated coins produced by the Denver Mint, and 272,869 proof coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. The MS70 and PF70 graded dollars are fairly easy to find.
