Six commemorative dollars were released in 1995, and five of them centered around the upcoming 1996 Olympic Summer Games. The last commemorative dollar issued during the year honored the Special Olympics World Games, which were held that year in Connecticut. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and is said to be the first U.S. coin that featured a living female. (She was the founder of the Special Olympics.) The reverse of the coin features a Special Olympics medal, a rose stem, and a quote from Eunice Shriver that says, “As we hope for the best in them, hope is reborn in us.
There were 89,301 uncirculated coins produced by the West Point Mint, and 351,764 proof coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. The uncirculated dollars are fairly easy to find in MS70 condition. The Philadelphia Mint proof dollars are very difficult to find in perfect PF70 condition.
