Owner Comments:
When the coin was originally being designed - invitations were sent out to 23 prominent artists and sculptors to come up with a design for Sacagawea. Glenna Goodacre's design was chosen and she received a $5000 commission for her work - and the $5000 payment was received in 5000 special Sacagawea dollars. (Thomas Rogers designed the eagle on the reverse of the coin but did not receive a special commission because he was already an employee of the US Mint.) The Mint Director Phil Diehl personally delivered these 5000 coins to Glenna Goodacre at her Santa Fe studio in New Mexico. These coins were extra special and were different than the rest of the 2000 Sacagawea Dollars. These coin themselves were struck on burnished planchets by polished dies using higher pressure - which resulted in a proof-like surface. They were also treated with an antioxidant to help preserve their special appearance.
