Owner Comments:

1907 $20 High Relief PR64 NGC. The crispness or clarity of strike on this example provides the immediate characteristic necessary to receive the proof designation from NGC. The soft, satiny luster that is readily visible is the result of extensive die polishing lines, each sharply delineated. In fact, the fields on both sides are entirely covered by these tiny raised die lines. All other details, those of the design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, are fully defined, exactly as he intended. For the connoisseur who desires the finest visual appearance, proof examples such as this piece are the logical choice.
The exact number of proofs that were originally coined is not known, although the quantity was certainly quite small. It is also not known how many have survived to this day, but it is probably a majority. NGC has certified nearly 200 of these coins as proofs in various numerical grades, although we believe that this total includes a large number of resubmissions. The net population of proof High Reliefs is probably half or even less the number certified. This particular example has highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces with only a few tiny ticks as expected for the grade. A few minor rim bruises are evident upon close inspection. The edges on both sides show faint traces of a wire rim or fin, although proof examples are known of both the wire rim and flat rim varieties.
