The 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, inventor of the Braille system, which is still used by the blind to read and write. It is the first time in history, a United States coin features readable Braille. BRAILLE (abbreviated Brl in Braille code). Although Braille characters have appeared on previous US coins, this is the first time the characters appear large enough to be readable by touch.
The United States Mint began sales of the 2009 Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollars on March 26, 2009 through December 11, 2009
