Six commemorative dollars were released in 1996, and the first four were issued to commemorate the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The fourth of these Olympic dollars honored the Paralympics. The obverse of the coin features an image of a man with arms upraised, apparently finishing a track and field wheelchair event. The reverse features an image of a stylized Olympic torch with the inscription "Atlanta 1996 Centennial Olympic Games."
There was a small production of 14,497 uncirculated coins produced by the Denver Mint (the smallest number for silver dollars in the modern commemorative era), and 84,280 proof coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Because of the small mintages, the uncirculated dollars are difficult to find in MS70 condition. The Philadelphia Mint proof dollars are almost impossible to find in perfect PF70 condition. A PF70 graded coin is a key coin in any collection of Modern Commemorative dollars.
