Owner Comments:
This is a great looking coin. Soft centre as usual. However, it has all the details present. At the time of purchase (September 2018) NGC has graded 10 specimens, 2@45, 2@58, 3@61, 1@62, 1@63, and 1@64. For the entire 4 escudos series, the only date with more specimens certified by NGC is 1825 with 17, followed by 1863 with 10. For the year, mint, assayer combination, only 8 examples were found in Heritage, of which only 5 are numerically graded.
This coin was auctioned by Heritage in 2016 (New York City Show), before I bought it, and the description form the sale’s catalogue is as follows:
"Republic gold 4 Escudos 1863 Mo-CH MS61 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM-381.6. Brilliant Uncirculated with strong mint luster and the expected moderate handling evidence for the designation. The single Mint State example currently certified by NGC and a date rated as "extremely rare" in this grade by Long. Undoubtedly rare and eminently collectible in this fine quality."
