Six commemorative dollars were released in 1996. During this year, because of resistance from coin collectors, Congress passed a new law going forward to limit commemorative coin programs to no more than two issues per year. The fifth silver dollar issued in 1996 was the National Community Service Silver Dollar, honoring the spirit of volunteerism in America. The obverse of the coin features an image of a standing Lady Liberty with a lamp and a book in her right hand. The reverse features the inscription, "Service for America."
There was a small production of 23,500 uncirculated coins produced by the San Francisco Mint, and 101,543 proof coins -- also from the San Francisco Mint. The uncirculated and proof coins are the easiest 1996 dollars to find in MS70 or PF70 condition, but are still fairly rare.
