Owner Comments:
The first commemorative $5 gold coin released in 2016 was issued to honor the famous American author Mark Twain, a.k.a. Samuel Clemens. The coin's obverse features a 3/4 profile view of the bushy mustachioed Twain. The reverse of the coin features a paddle-wheeled steamboat. I believe this is the first U.S. coin to honor a novelist.
There was a small mintage of 5,693 uncirculated and 13,266 proof coins produced by the West Point Mint. The MS70 graded dollars are rare and may be a key coin in the Modern Commemorative era. Perfect PF70 graded dollars are also pretty hard to find -- there are under 500 graded by NGC in perfect condition.
