Six commemorative dollars were released in 1995, most of them centered around the upcoming 1996 Olympic Summer Games. The first dollar issued, however, was produced to honor 100 years of service in preserving Civil War battlefields. (As marked from the establishment of Gettysburg as a National Military Park in 1895). The obverse of the coin features a soldier kneeling next to a fallen soldier and offering him a canteen of water. The reverse features a view of the Gettysburg battlefield and a long text inscription from an officer who valiantly fought for the North, Joshua Chamberlain. The inscription reads: "In great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass, bodies disappear, but spirits linger to consecrate ground for the visionplace of souls." I will have to research this, but of all coins minted, this coin might have the most writing on its reverse.
There were 45,866 uncirculated coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint, and 437,114 proof coins produced by the San Francisco Mint. The uncirculated dollars are difficult to find in MS70 condition. The San Francisco Mint proof dollars are very difficult to find in perfect PF70 condition.
