Owner Comments:

The 1887-S prooflike coins do not seem to appear at auction very often in spite of a NGC PL/DPL population of 125 coins. Q David Bowers writes in his book Silver Dollars And Trade Dollars Of The United States (Vol. 2) that this date is "Readily available as one-sided prooflike (obverse), nearly always with numerous die finish lines." This coin fits that description as the obverse is close to DMPL and the reverse is PL with the aforementioned die polish lines.

The 1888-S coin in my set also shares these attributes, but it has a nice DMPL cameo obverse. The San Francisco Mint must have changed its procedures (or workers) for polishing the dies as the beautiful prooflikes common in the early S-Mint Morgans are hard to find in the late 1880 dated coins.

In spite of the scrapes and hits on Ms. Liberty's cheek (accounting for the grade), the coin has decent contrast.

I have attributed this coin as a VAM-6 (very near date).

Purchased from Heritage at the 2004 November Palm Beach, Florida Bullet Sale #359 (Lot: 1754).
