The Christopher Columbus Quincentenary half dollar is the 6th half dollar in the "Modern Commemorative" era. The 1992-S half dollar commemorates the Quincentenary (500th year) anniversary of Christopher Columbus's exploration of the New World. The obverse of the coin features Columbus's landing in the New world. The reverse of the coin features the three ships in his fleet. There were 390,154 proof coins minted. These half dollars are comprised of 92% copper and 8% nickel.
