Owner Comments:

The first commemorative dollar released in 2016 was the Mark Twain Silver Dollar, issued in tribute to the famous author, a.k.a. Samuel Clemens. The coin's obverse features the bushy mustachioed Twain, smoking a pipe, with an image appearing in the pipe's smoke of Huckleberry Finn and his friend Jim on a raft. The reverse of the coin features images from some of his stories (a knight from 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court,' a frog from 'The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,' and Huck and Jim from 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.') I believe this is the first U.S. coin to honor a novelist.

There was a mintage of 26,284 uncirculated and 78,536 proof coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint. The MS70 graded dollars are in good supply (coins graded almost 8:1 in MS70 versus MS69 condition). Perfect PF70 graded dollars are also pretty easy to find -- they outnumber PF69 graded coins by a factor greater than 5:1.
