1986 was the first year of the Silver Eagle series. The Mint was apparently testing different die preparation methods this year, as the mint state coins are often found in a multitude of different-looking finishes, including Proof-like as well as more matte examples.This date is relatively rare in MS70 with only 1.1% of those submitted to NGC attaining that grade.
