NGC US Coin Census for Peace Dollars (1921-1935)

Owner Comments:

The lower relief Peace dollar would satisfy the mint’s production problems with the coin, but the quality of the coins would vary. For some years in the early 1920s some coins would be so poorly struck on the reverse that the legend, “United States of America,” would be weak. Others, like this piece would display all of the intended detail.

At any rate the production of Peace dollars would continue despite the fact that there was little demand for them. Finally in 1935 the mint would issue what many collectors would come to regard as the last Peace dollar, but we were in for a surprise.

In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson paid a political debt to some of his western supporters and authorized the production of some new Peace dollars. This decision was surprising in view of the fact that the nation was in grips of a coin shortage, and the productive capacity of the U. S. mint system was stretched to the limit. Nevertheless the Denver mint struck a run of Peace dollars, but the coins were never officially issued. To this day rumors persist the some coins did get out of the mint and now rest in private hands. Recently a private firm has produced fantasy examples of this shadowy coin.

The coin above is well struck and displays attractive luster. It is an above average example of a coin that is surprisingly hard to find true Gem Unciruclated (MS-65 or higher) condition.
