In 1996, two commemorative half dollars were issued to honor the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. The first coin was the 1996 Olympic Swimming Half Dollar. It was the 13th half dollar minted in the "Modern Commemorative" era. The obverse of the 1996-S half dollar features a swimmer in competition. The reverse of the coin features the symbol for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. There were 49,533 uncirculated coins produced, which was the smallest mintage to date (first time under 100,000 coins). These half dollars are made from 92% copper and 8% nickel. This 1996-S half is a key coin in any collection of Modern Commemorative half dollars and is somewhat difficult to find in perfect MS70 graded condition.
