The 1968 issue commemorates the presidency of Charles Robberts Swart (1894 - 1982) who served as the last Governor General of the Union of South Africa from 1959 to 1961 and the first State President of the Republic of South Africa from 1961 to 1967.

1c coins issued in 1968 circulated for 22 years until they were replaced with an even smaller copper-plated steel version that was introduced in 1990.

Obverse
The obverse of the 1968 coins displays the portrait of Charles Robberts Swart, South Africa's first president, facing left.

Below the neck truncation, the initials of the designer: T.S. (for Tommy Sasseen).

Around left, the legend SOUTH AFRICA in English and the date of issue 1968.

Reverse
The reverse shows at its centre two Cape sparrows (Passer melanurus) on a branch. Below the bird on the right, in small letters the initials of the designer T.S. (for Tommy Sasseen).
