A remarkable woman. She served as first lady (in many respects) for both James Madison as well as Jefferson before him. Although she was the "second lady", wife of the Vice President under Jefferson she was Jefferson official hostess. During the War of 1812 she saved countless US treasures from British destruction at the "President's House" (White House.) Later,after the death of President Madison, she was seen as the Grande Dame of Washington D.C.
