PCGS type 15 holder.

The Reverse of 1938 (sometimes refered to as Type I)is characterized by the weak, wavy steps of Monticello as well as a thinner porch. Coins of this variety often contain tiny carbon spots or specks on both obverse and reverse. Only one proof die is known to have been used in the production of the 1940 Proof nickel. Combined with an already low mintage of 11,246 proof nickels in 1940, that makes this variety extremely rare. To date, both NGC & PCGS combined have graded less than 100 coins of this variety.
