The One Rand 2013 Protea coin depicts the arrival of Nelson Mandela in the Great Place, in the town of Mqhekezweni, where he spent most of his childhood growing up.

On nine lines on the left, the quote: "In the moment of beholding Jogintaba and his court I felt like a sapling pulled root and branch from the earth and flung into the center of a stream whose strong current I could not resist." Nelson Mandela.

The face value and denomination R 1 (One Rand) are above.

In the exergue, Mqhekezweni The Great Place, below which the initials of the reverse die-sinker (engraver) MJS (for Marthinus J Scheepers); the design is by Lilian Guerra.

The obverse, common for all coins of the series, features Mr Mandela wearing one of his iconic Madiba shirts, underlined by a wreath made from South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea, and the date of issue 2013 divided by the portrait.

Above Mandela's shoulder, the initials of the die-sinker VLC (for VL Chipa); the design is by Lilian Guerra.

Around above, the legend SOUTH AFRICA.
