1902 PCGS MS66PL VAM-16

Tied for the finest certified. Deep mirrors are very difficult for all 20th century Morgans, and contrast is always very low. The strike, however, is pretty good on this, with only weakness in the stars to the right of the date. It is much better than the average 1902.

PCGS has not found a single 1902 worthy of DMPL designation. The prooflikes of the date are nearly always the result of heavily repolished dies. This coin is a strong exception. To the untrained eye, the reflectivity from a reploished die may look hairlined or with a milky haze, depending on the degree of polish. In this case, there are no signs of die polish. The set also has another exception to that. It is an ANACS MS63DMPL VAM-2 that is surely one of the first off of that die pair as well.
