The Cumberland Gap is a great break in the Appalachian Mountain chain, carved by wind and water. It became the first gateway to the West, taking Native Americans and Pioneers into the wilderness of Kentucky and Tennessee. Visitors to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park enjoy many miles of trails and scenic beauty as the 24,000 acre park stretches for 26 miles along Cumberland Mountain. The natural beauty of Appalachian mountain country, lush with vegetation, supports diverse animal life including white–tailed deer, black bear, and wild turkey. It was established as a national site in 1940.
The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park quarter is the second in 2016, and the 32nd overall in the ATB quarter program. The revers design features an intrepid pioneer looking off to the mountains of the West. Inscriptions are "CUMBERLAND GAP," "KENTUCKY," "2016," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "FIRST DOORWAY TO THE WEST."
