Quoting Heritage Auction's description for this piece: "Even though more than 1.3 million examples of the 1895 half eagle were struck, the great majority of examples surviving today are either in the AU ranges or the lower Mint State grades. Those examples certified at the leading service average out midway between MS61 and MS62. Only four submissions at both services combined meet the Superb Gem level of the present coin, one at PCGS, this piece and two others at NGC (2/15). The orange-gold surfaces boast an impeccable strike on both sides and meticulous preservation, showing no mentionable post-Mint distractions. An interesting die crack appears above ED on the reverse. A top-notch type coin."
