At one time, the 1889-S was considered the rarest Morgan dollar. When the United States Coin Company sold a set of Morgans in 1915, an Uncirculated 1889-S brought $19, while a similarly graded 1893-S only realized $4! However, beginning in 1937 bags of the 1889-S began to be released by the San Francisco mint and the Redfield Hoard had several bags. Today, the glory days of the 1889-S are long past, but it is still very scarce in Gem condition.
