Owner Comments:

It seems that a sizeable number of 1887-S dollars were released into circulation shortly after striking. The remainder of the mintage stayed in storage in the mint until the early 1940s, at which time they began to be paid out at face value. As a result, auction results were impressively high for this issue in the early years of the 20th century. Bowers relates that an Uncirculated '87-S was sold at auction for $12.50 in 1914. Like many of the other S-mint issues from the mid and late 1880s, the 1887-S is plentiful in the lower grades of Uncirculated, but very rare in Gem and better grades.
