With just three-quarters of a million pieces struck, the 1886-S dollar was a lower-mintage Morgan issue from the start, and meltings of somewhere between a quarter and a half of the original mintage (as reported by Q. David Bowers in his Buyer's Guide to Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States) only exacerbated
