Lyman Allen #3.05 (KM #179) - Mintage: 5,000,000
1941 was the final year that coins were produced by the Manila Mint. The mint sustained heavy damage on December 7, 1941 from Japanese aerial bombardment and additional damage in 1945 during the Battle of Manila which liberated the city.
This coin exhibits a typically poor strike on both sides. On the reverse, the shield is nearly flat in the center and the scroll is virtually blank. The obverse is no better, the man's face shows almost no definition, the right hand has no discernible fingers, and the left shoulder is so flat that it nearly blends into the background field. With 5,000,000 coins minted, it's not difficult to find full red specimens of this coin. Full gem red examples though are difficult to obtain, and coins that receive an MS66RD are exceptionally rare. As of this revision, this is the only one graded MS66RD by NGC with none finer. PCGS has graded 2 as MS66RD, with none finer.
