Owner Comments:
The 1855-O was the last gold dollar that the New Orleans Mint would issue. It is also the only Type II gold dollar that the "O Mint" would produce which makes it a one year type coin for the design. Doug Winter has estimated that 400 to 500 examples of this coin exist in the collectable, no problem grades. As such the coin does have some scarcity but is available to most collectors after a reasonable search.
The piece shown above is very well struck with a full date and considerable design detail. The coin is a true "slider" which is an old time term for a coin that might "slide" between the AU and low Mint State grades. As usual my photo has over emphasized the minor marks that are on the surfaces of this beautiful coin.
