The 1852-C gold dollar is a scarce coin, but it is not among the rarest of the Charlotte Mint one dollar coins. Doug Winter has estimated that there are from 250 to 350 examples in all of the collectable grades and 90 to 120 pieces in the AU and Mint State categories. As such the coin is a bit more available in the higher grades of preservation than previous studies had indicated.
The piece shown above has a fair amount of mint luster on both sides and no defects of note. The flat area on the reverse below and to the right of the "1" is a mint caused defect. While this piece and many others were struck, a piece of foreign material, which is called a struck through, caused this void in the design surface.
Overall I saw a number of examples of this coin, including a few that were graded Mint State. I did purchase them because I disagree with the grade, and I felt that given the price, the coins were not a good value. This piece, at less than half the price, was a better value.
