In the United States in 1823/ The U.S. mint engravers had a great deal of problems with the three punch and produced three varieties. The first was the Broken 3, then came the Pathched 3, and finally the Ugly 3.At one point during the rework there were many “perfect 3’s produced, giving this date 4 vareity types for the 1823 Bust Half.
